Calico Cats

Just like their canine counterparts, there are many kinds of cats.  Some cats are small, while others are large, but they all have unique and charming coats.  The alluring pattern of the Calico Cat is something we all know and love, but there are some things you might not have known about these feline fancies.

What Are Calico Cats?
First, “Calico” is not a breed, but a tri-color pattern observed among several domestic breeds.  As a result, Calico kittens come in a wide variety of shapes and sizes.  However, every Calico Cat has a mix of three distinct colors: white, with patches of orange and black.  In 2001, Calico Cats were named the official cat of Maryland because of their common colors with the state bird (Baltimore Oriole), and the state insect (Baltimore Checkerspot Butterfly).  Some cats whose breed standards permit a Calico coat include the American Shorthair, the Japanese Bobtail, and the Exotic Shorthair, just to name a few.  Additionally, the American Shorthair, British Shorthair, Persian, Arabian Mau, Siberian, Turkish Van, Turkish Angora and Norwegian Forest Cat can all have Calico coats.

Are All Calico Cats Female?
Yes – well, sort of.  Statistically, 1 in 3,000 Calico Cats can be male, but that’s only made possible by a genetic anomaly.  The Calico coat is linked to the presence of two X chromosomes, and since males typically have only one X chromosome, most Calico Cats are female.  On occasion, a rare condition yields an additional X chromosome among males, paving the way for that familiar Calico coat.

Commonly Confused with Calico
One coat pattern often confused with Calico is the Tortoiseshell Cat.  Both are identified by their patterns, rather than their breed, but there are some significant differences between them.  Both cats have orange and black markings, but Calico Cats also have large white patches.  Also, the Calico Cat’s colors are distinct from one another, while the Tortoiseshell coat is a blend of predominately orange and black.
